The Internet Essentials

By Peter DeHaan

Here are the essential elements of getting the most out of the Internet.  Failure to follow these basic guidelines could put your organization at a severe disadvantage:

  • Organizations must have a website.  At minimum, it should be professional, be an effective marketing piece, and contain complete contact information.  Too many businesses and non-profit organizations have put this off -- or done it badly.

  • Key staff (preferably all staff) need to have their own business email address.  Having one email address that everyone uses is second rate and unprofessional.

  • Email addresses must convey professionalism.  Is blond4you@CheapEmail.com an email address that you can be proud to use for professional communications?

  • Make sure that you frequently check your email; also periodically test your email.  In sending messages to the “contact us” email addresses on Websites about 15 percent are rejected and another 65 percent are never answered.  Make sure that your organization is not included in these unfortunate statistics.

  • Beyond these essentials, you need to be thinking about how you can better serve your answering service clients via the web.  The Internet holds the future for the answering service industry.
